Uninstalling PassMan

Introduction

PassMan safely stores and manages all your passwords and other private data. This tutorial covers all the major functions. If you can't find what you're looking for here send an email to support@ijen.net.

Installation Instructions

1.) Download the installation file from www.ijen.net/PassMan.htm
2.) Run the installation file by double-clicking on it.
3.) Answer "yes" or "ok" to all the default questions.
4.) You will not have a PassMan icon on your desktop as well as a PassMan menu in your Start/Programs PassMan Plus menu. Click one of these icons to start PassMan.

Now you're ready to setup PassMan to run on your computer.

5.) Once you have started PassMan for the first time you will need to select a secret Question and Answer that will be used to allow you to gain access to your private data. You can always change your question and answer later at any time. Let the Setup Wizard guide you through the process.

Enter a login question and click "Next"

Now enter an Answer here. Enter it TWICE to make sure you type it correctly. Click "Next".

PassMan will now attempt to reboot your PC to finish the installation. Close any open applications and save your data first.

Setting Windows Startup Options

Windows Startup Option 1 - With this option selected PassMan Plus will open after Windows starts up. Your passwords will be quickly available once you click the traffic light icon in the icon tray (next to the system clock).

If the incorrect answer is used to sign in the attempt is logged and you will be notified of the unsuccessful attempt next time you login using the correct secret answer. PassMan also notifies the would-be hacker that their attempt is recorded (see below).

Windows Startup Option 2 - PassMan will still function normally whenever the program is started, but you will have to start PassMan via the PassMan icon in the Windows "All Programs" menu item. Once you start PassMan the first time it will be available to you any time via the icon in the system tray.

Click on the "traffic light" icon in the icon tray to open PassMan.

You can also run PassMan any time you need to by using the "Hot Key" combination "CTRL" + ALT" + "P" (all three keys pressed at the same time).

PassMan Startup Option 1 - By enabling this Hotkey combination you can go straight to your password list, bypassing the secure login each time. This adds convenience if you need to access your passwords repeatedly throughout the day and don't want to have to login each time. PassMan will still require you to login the first time it is accessed.

PassMan Startup Option 2 - By enabling this Hotkey combination you can quickly access your passwords, but PassMan will always open in LOCKED mode. This is the most secure setting.

Monitoring Intrusion Attempts

When PassMan is in locked mode and someone attempts to bypass it their attempts are logged and recorded. You will be notified of the intruder attempt the next time you correctly unlock PassMan using your secret answer.

PassMan will notify you with the following message:

To view the intruder's attempts click "Yes" here.

PassMan will display the log of attempts that failed. It looks like this:

Knowing the date, time, and password/answer attempted can many times help you determine who tried to gain unauthorized access.

Managing Passwords

Adding/Editing Passwords

Adding passwords (or any other type of data you want to keep safe) is easy.

Simply type into the "Add/Edit Item" text box (shown below).

Then add the username or other piece of private data to the "Add/Edit UserName text box (below).

Finish the entry by putting the password or other private data in the "Add/Edit Password/Code" text box (below).

You can add the URL to the protected web site or the path to a file on your computer or your network. Click "Launch" to go to the web site or file. The associated password will be automatically copied to the clipboard so you can easily paste it into to password area of the login prompt.

Finally, Click the "Add" button to add the entry to the list. Your entry now shows up in the password list in alphabetical order. (Results below)

Generating Random Passwords

Many times it is useful to be able to generate random passwords in cases where you are prompted to supply a temporary password and you don't want to use your usual or "most private" passwords. PassMan can generate numeric or text passwords for you. You can then easily store them for quick access whenever you need them.

Select "Generate PW" from the screen shown above.

You'll now be prompted to indicate the length of the password you want to generate.

Now you have an opportunity to specify whether or not the generated password is text or numeric.

Your newly generated password appears in the "Add/Edit Password/Code" text box as shown above.

From here you can copy it to the clipboard or add the password list.

Copying Username/Password to the Clipboard

It is useful to copy UserNames and Passwords to the Windows Clipboard in your day-to-day routine. An example of this would be any web pages you visit that require a password. PassMan keeps you from having to remember or write down each individual password assigned/required by each site.

Simply select the item from the list, then select "<Copy Password>" as show below.

Now navigate to the site requiring the password. Right-click your mouse in the password field and select "Paste" from the popup menu. Your password appears without you having to remember anything!

Below is an EXAMPLE of pasting your password into a web site using a right mouse click.

Deleting Items from the List

PassMan installs many example items in the password list. You can delete all of them at once by selecting "DELETE THE ENTIRE PASSWORD LIST" from the "Actions" menu or right-click within the password list and select it as shown below.

You can also delete one password at a time by:

     * Double-Clicking it on the list (bringing it down to the edit area), then selecting the "Delete" button OR
     * Right-Clicking on the item in the list then selecting "Delete" from the popup menu

Printing the Password List

Print the entire Password List at any time by selecting from the "Actions" menu.

Changing your Login Question

You can easily change or reset your login question at any time. Just select the following menu.

First you'll be presented with the following screen. To prevent others from changing your question/answer and locking you out you must first answer the old question. Enter the answer and select "Next".

Next, make up a question that has a simple answer that nobody else would know. Make it something you could never forget.

Finally, you'll type in your secret answer. It is best to keep this answer short and avoid using upper and lower case letters.

Changing your Login Answer

You can change just your answer without having to change your question if you want. Choose the following menu.

To prevent others from changing your question/answer and locking you out you must first answer the old question. Enter the answer and select "Next".

Now enter the answer to your new Question. Remember to enter it twice to ensure that it is typed correctly. (Also make sure you have your caps lock OFF).

Backing up and Restoring your Private Data

From time to time you may want to backup your private data. PassMan comes with a utility to do this.

Select the following menu.

To Backup or Restore your data, select the appropriate menu from the screen below.

Then all you have to do is select a location to store or retrieve the PassMan backup file.
